Swimming Replaces Soccer for Teen with Flat Feet

At the age of 10, C.J. Kopecki dreamed of playing soccer for his future adolescent years. Unfortunately for Kopecki, he has flat feet. This meant that Kopecki would not be able to run as well as the rest of his teammates. Rather than give up on the prospect of an athletic career, Kopecki instead devoted himself to swimming, and now at 14 he’s a valuable member of the South Florida Aquatic Club (SOFLO).

Kopecki recently came in third place in the 13-14 Division high-point standings in the Florida Gold Coast 14-Under Junior Olympics. "I decided to try it out,” Kopecki said. “I went to a practice and … got taught all of the strokes and learned to swim. I have loved it ever since then.”

What are Flat Feet?

Flat feet are a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. Standing about 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arch never formed during growth.

Symptoms:

·         Pain around the heel or arch area

·         Trouble standing on the tip toe.

·         Swelling around the inside of the ankle.

·         Flat look to one or both feet.

·         Having your shoes feel uneven when worn
