According to boxer Timothy Bradley, part of the reason why he had so much difficulty fighting Manny Pacquaio in 2012 was because he had developed painful blisters on his feet. Although he still ended up winning the match, Bradley claims he was hampered by his decision to not wear socks in the ring, something former champion Mike Tyson supposedly used to do.

The two boxers faced each other recently at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Bradley’s trainer Freddie Roach is angry about his protégé’s blisters excuse, and issued a profanity-laced statement about how the condition of his feet shouldn’t have affected his performance in the fight.

Blisters are a common condition in athletes. For help caring for blisters on the feet, see podiatrist Dr. Jill Hagen of New Jersey. Dr. Hagen can treat your foot or ankle condition and injuries.

Blisters on the Feet

When tight or ill-fitting footwear is worn, many times a foot blister may develop. Blisters can even develop by constant rubbing from the shoe, often times leading to pain.

What is a Foot Blister?

A foot blister is a small pocket that is filled with fluid, forming on the upper most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid, and may lead to drainage of blood or pus if the area has become infected.

How do they Form?

Blisters of the feet are almost always the result of shoe rubbing and constant friction of the skin and material. Long periods of walking in shoes, sandals, or boots which don’t fit properly can result in a blister. Those who often have moisture or humidity in the feet are prone to blister formation easily.

Prevention & Treatment

Proper care is vital to alleviate pain and prevent infection to the affected area of the foot. The best treatment is to leave them alone. New skin will develop under the blister and during the healing stages, your blister will pop.

-          Do not lance the blister , which can lead to infection.

At the age of 10, C.J. Kopecki dreamed of playing soccer for his future adolescent years. Unfortunately for Kopecki, he has flat feet. This meant that Kopecki would not be able to run as well as the rest of his teammates. Rather than give up on the prospect of an athletic career, Kopecki instead devoted himself to swimming, and now at 14 he’s a valuable member of the South Florida Aquatic Club (SOFLO).

Kopecki recently came in third place in the 13-14 Division high-point standings in the Florida Gold Coast 14-Under Junior Olympics. "I decided to try it out,” Kopecki said. “I went to a practice and … got taught all of the strokes and learned to swim. I have loved it ever since then.”

A team of six faculty members and eighteen students from the University of Colorado participated in Undeserved Interprofessional Health Training and Education program. The program, which has been running annually the past four years, had participants performing services including clipping toenails, provided basic foot-related toiletries and checking for any potential complications for approximately seventy five homeless people.

One of the program leaders, nurse practitioner Jan Beezley, believes this program provides students with the confidence to work in urban areas with patients with health conditions. “These students are really mission-driven and motivated,” Beezley said. “They’ve added this on top of med school.” The event took place in the St. Francis Center homeless shelter.

Every Day Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. After all, without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks. It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before, for example.

For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops.

Also, wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat. Also make sure that the socks fit properly and are not uncomfortably tight.
